In the SME sector succession planning can be very subjective and is almost based on rewarding good service rather than on meeting the needs of the business. This is challenging for departmental heads as well as MDs faced with the tricky dilemma of thinking strategically but managing tactically. Often this is framed as l don’t want to lose this person, so how do l retain them (and their skills and knowledge) even though they are probably not ones to be able to develop and grow the business. This presentation seeks to strip out the need to think longer term and bigger picture with the business in mind rather than make short term tactical decisions which may be costly and sub-optimal. This presentation will be of particular interest to MDs and senior managers contemplating filling their next vacancy or starting to think about exiting the business and putting plans in place to ensure strength in depth.
